Welcome to this Course Unit

Fundamentals of Environmental Engineering

The objective of the course:

Providing the necessary background for understanding the relevant processes in circular economy. For this reason, the main sources of contamination and the related compounds are presented, the main characterization techniques are introduced as well as the processes of transformation in the environment.

Expectations from t
he students:

Refresh some chemistry, learn how to solve simple exercises and to perform simple calculation to quantify relevant parameters in the environment.

Course Structure:

Part 1 : Introduction to environmental issues and of sources of contamination

Part 2 : Organic compounds relevant for the environment: sources and properties

Part 3 : Water, waste and soil characterization

Part 4: Transformation of compounds in the environment: degradation processes

I hope you enjoy the lessons as we delve deeper into the course content!

Resource circularity, while fundamental for reducing environmental impacts, does not eliminate the generation of waste. Even in circular systems, residual materials and by-products inevitably remain, making it essential to study and implement effective waste management strategies alongside circular economy practices. The course will provide you with the theoretical and practical tools to tackle the challenges of waste management within a circular economy context, allowing you to understand both existing strategies and emerging innovations.
