EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FOR THE PARTICIPATION IN THE SUM CONFERENCE3 marzo 2026, 13:01This registration serves to express interest in participating in the SUM – Symposium on Urban Mining and Circular Economy, taking place from May 20th to 22nd, 2026, in Procida (NA). The registration fee, travel, and accommodation will be covered by the SEI ICEA Excellence project, while participants will only be responsible for their own meals. Students who express interest will be selected by a committee (Prof. Grossule, Prof. Lavagnolo, Prof. Beggio) based on their academic performance, with the following criteria: Eligibility: only students enrolled in the first year of the Environmental Engineering program, Environmental Sustainability curriculum (the curriculum relevant to the symposium) will be considered. Exam Performance: results (project and written exam grade) of the Circular and Sustainable Waste Management course (which directly relates to the symposium’s topics) General Academic performance: overall academic performance, including grade and credits earned by the end of the first semester and other relevant fulfillments Link to the symposium:  https://www.sumsymposium.it/it/ The expression of interest will close on March 15th, time 12.00 a.m.15 marzo 2026, 12:00

Corsi

Categoria DIPARTIMENTO DI INGEGNERIA CIVILE, EDILE E AMBIENTALE - ICEA / A.A.2025 - 2026 / Corsi di laurea / IN0510 - INGEGNERIA PER L'AMBIENTE E IL TERRITORIO

Together, we will explore how waste can be transformed from a challenge into a valuable resource. This course on Circular and Sustainable Waste Management guides you through innovative strategies to reduce, reuse, and recycle, while safely closing the waste loop—empowering you to turn environmental challenges into sustainable solutions for a brighter, greener future.

Welcome to this Course Unit

Fundamentals of Environmental Engineering

The objective of the course:

Providing the necessary background for understanding the relevant processes in circular economy. For this reason, the main sources of contamination and the related compounds are presented, the main characterization techniques are introduced as well as the processes of transformation in the environment.

Expectations from t
he students:

Refresh some chemistry, learn how to solve simple exercises and to perform simple calculation to quantify relevant parameters in the environment.

Course Structure:

Part 1 : Introduction to environmental issues and of sources of contamination

Part 2 : Organic compounds relevant for the environment: sources and properties

Part 3 : Water, waste and soil characterization

Part 4: Transformation of compounds in the environment: degradation processes

I hope you enjoy the lessons as we delve deeper into the course content!

Best regards,

Professor Roberto RAGA

Resource circularity, while fundamental for reducing environmental impacts, does not eliminate the generation of waste. Even in circular systems, residual materials and by-products inevitably remain, making it essential to study and implement effective waste management strategies alongside circular economy practices. The course will provide you with the theoretical and practical tools to tackle the challenges of waste management within a circular economy context, allowing you to understand both existing strategies and emerging innovations.
