The Catharsis Project, launched in 2022, is a student-led initiative addressing the environmental challenges of greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector. Its name, from the Greek “κάθαρσις” (“purification”), reflects the aim of “cleansing” the energy system through sustainable, pragmatic, and scientifically grounded solutions.
Structured as a transdisciplinary laboratory, Catharsis involves students from diverse academic backgrounds who tackle climate-related issues in areas such as technology, environment, economics, and society. Each participant identifies a problem and develops realistic solutions based on scientific literature and innovative approaches. Core objectives include evaluating the impact of existing technologies and proposing alternatives that enhance efficiency, equity, and sustainability.
The project emphasizes international collaboration. English is the working language, and nearly half the members are international students. Beyond research, Catharsis is strongly engaged in science communication, sharing findings through digital channels, publications, and public events, fostering a bottom-up energy transition and active dialogue between academia and society.
