  • 🇮🇹  Questa pagina Moodle serve per la gestione dell'attività "Seminar Activities" (SA) della LM Mathematics.

    Tale attività può essere ottenuta in vari modi (partecipare alla attività seminariale preparando e presentando un seminario ed assistendo ad almeno due seminari di altri studenti; sostenere simili attività nel contesto di scuole estive o altre situazioni; attività di stage o tirocinio: vedere il regolamento dedicato sul sito del Corso di Studi).

    Chi inserisce questa attività nel piano di studi deve iscriversi a questa pagina Moodle, e concordare con il responsabile (attualmente M.Cailotto) la modalità per ottenere la registrazione.

    Qui di seguito sono indicati i passi per la modalità standard (consigliata, partecipare alla attività seminariale):

    1. scegliere un docente di riferimento e concordare un argomento per il seminario;
    2. preparare il seminario di 45 minuti;
    3. scrivere un abstract da consegnare in questa pagina Moodle nella sezione "Consegna testi" almeno 10 giorni prima della data prevista per la presentazione (l'abstract di una pagina scritta in LaTeX deve contenere data e luogo del seminario, nomi di studente e docente referente, titolo e riassunto del seminario; il titolo del file deve essere "aaaammgg-nomecognome-titolo.pdf" dove aaaa=anno, mm=mese, gg=giorno, es.20270321);
    4. fare la presentazione nel giorno previsto (la scelta del giorno e la prenotazione dell'aula sono a cura di studenti e relativi docenti referenti);
    5. far segnalare dal docente referente l'avvenuta presentazione (basta una mail al responsabile SA);
    6. assistere ad almeno due seminari tenuti da altri studenti (suggerimento: concordare una giornata di presentazioni comuni in 2-3 colleghi), e dichiararlo in questa pagina Moodle nella sezione "Dichiarazione presenze";
    7. comunicare al responsabile SA di aver soddisfatto le condizioni precedenti.

    🇬🇧  This Moodle page is used to manage the "Seminar Activities" (SA) requirement of the MSc in Mathematics.

    This activity can be fulfilled in several ways: by taking part in the seminar series, preparing and giving a seminar and attending at least two seminars given by other students; or by completing similar activities in the context of summer schools or other settings; or by Internship activity (see the dedicated regulations on the Degree Programme website).

    Students who include this activity in their study plan must enrol in this Moodle page and agree with the coordinator (currently M. Cailotto) on how to obtain the credit registration.

    The steps for the standard (recommended) route, i.e. taking part in the seminar series, are as follows:

    1. Choose a supervising professor and agree on a topic for the seminar.
    2. Prepare a 45-minute seminar.
    3. Write an abstract and upload it to this Moodle page, in the "Consegna testi / Text submission" section, at least 10 days before the planned date of the talk. The abstract must be one page long, written in LaTeX, and must include: date and place of the seminar, names of the student and of the supervising professor, title and summary of the seminar. The file must be named "yyyymmdd-firstnamelastname-title.pdf", where yyyy = year, mm = month, dd = day (e.g. 20270321).
    4. Give the presentation on the agreed day (students and their supervising professors are responsible for choosing the date and booking the room).
    5. Ask your supervising professor to confirm that the presentation took place (an email to the SA coordinator is enough).
    6. Attend at least two seminars given by other students (tip: agree with 2-3 fellow students on a joint day of presentations) and declare it on this Moodle page, in the "Dichiarazione presenze / Attendance declaration" section.
    7. Inform the SA coordinator that you have met all the conditions above.

    • Opened: Friday, 14 August 2026, 12:00 AM
      Due: Sunday, 31 October 2027, 12:00 AM

      🇮🇹  I file consegnati devono essere pdf generati da LaTeX contenenti:

      data e luogo del seminario, generalità dello studente e del docente referente, titolo e riassunto del seminario, indicazioni bibliografiche;

      il nome del file deve essere nel formato: "aaaammgg-nomecognome-titolo", dove naturalmente aaaa=anno, mm=mese, gg=giorno, nomecognome=studente, titolo=titolo del seminario (es. 20270523-PallinoPinco-Sul teorema di Tizio);

      la consegna va fatta almeno 10 giorni prima della data prevista per il seminario.

      🇬🇧  Submitted files must be PDFs generated with LaTeX, containing:

      date and place of the seminar, details of the student and of the supervising professor, title and summary of the seminar, bibliographic references;

      the file name must follow the format "yyyymmdd-firstnamelastname-title", where yyyy=year, mm=month, dd=day, firstnamelastname=student, title=title of the seminar (e.g. 20270523-PallinoPinco-On Tizio's theorem);

      the submission must be made at least 10 days before the scheduled date of the seminar.

  • 🇮🇹 Qui di seguito i docenti propongono argomenti per i seminari. Gli studenti interessati possono contattare direttamente il docente per concordare l'argomento e le modalità di preparazione.

    🇬🇧 Faculty members list below the topics they propose for seminars. Interested students may contact the professor directly to agree on the topic and on how to prepare it.

    • Algebra meets Claude meets LEAN (prof. Jakob Scholbach)

      A group of dedicated Master students will ...

      ... learn the basics of the theorem prover LEAN,

      ... apply this concretely in the context of commutative algebra/algebraic geometry,

      ... learn how to use AI tools to formalize proofs.

      The seminar will start at the end of February 2027. Interested students are kindly asked to inscribe themselves at https://stem.elearning.unipd.it/enrol/index.php?id=17365

    • Optimal control of stochastic processes (prof. Cecchin Alekos)

      Possible topics: value function, dynamic programming equation, backward stochastic differential equations, stochastic maximum principle, second order viscosity solutions.

    • Statistical physics, information theory and optimization (prof. Marco Formentin)

      Statistical mechanics uses the language of probability to study the collective behavior of systems composed of a huge number of particles. The introduction of disordered systems has opened up the road to interesting applications beyond physics, in particular to information theory and combinatorial optimization.
      Bibliography: M. Mezard, A. Montanari, “Information, physics and computation”, Oxford, 2008

    • Quantization of random variables (prof. Giorgia Callegaro)

      Quantization is a versatile and robust technique used in many applied sciences (including mathematical finance) for discretize random variables and stochastic processes and quickly compute expectations and conditional expectations.

    • Large deviation theory: the art of estimating the probability of rare events (prof. Alberto Chiarini)

    • Random Graphs and Networks (prof. Alessandra Bianchi)

      Random graphs are probabilistic models for real-world networks, roughly defined as a probability measure on a  given set of graphs. They allow to analyze the large-scale features appearing  in complex networks, including "small world" and "scale-free" phenomena.

    • Topics in Algebra (prof. Jorge Vitoria)

      Proposed topics are available at this page: https://sites.google.com/view/jorgevitoria/#h.pzks8h9p20b2

    • "Nichols algebras for beginners" (prof. Giovanna Carnovale)

      Nichols algebras are a family of rings that can be constructed starting from a vector space and and an operator. Examples include the polynomial rings on any number of variables, the exterior algebra, but in general they are much more complicated. The seminar would serve as an introduction to this subject.

    • "An introduction to hyperplane arrangements" (prof. Giovanna Carnovale)

      An hyperplane arrangement is a collection of affine or vector subspaces of codimension 1 in an affine or vector space. They can be studied by analyzing the combonatorics of their mutual intersection, as well as analyzing the geometry of their complement. The seminar would give an overview of the interplay of these two points of view, focusing on key examples.
