Period: Second semester

Course unit contents: The alphabet of soils: the O, A, E, B, C horizons.
- Basic concepts: soil mineralogy (esp. clay minerals), soil physics (water retention and pF curves), soil biota and the organic matter cycle.
- Elements of soil classification (Soil Taxonomy and FAO/WRB) and soil mapping.
- Pedogenetic processes: weathering, bioturbation, pedoturbation, eluviation-illuviation, oxidation-reduction, and hydromorphism.
- Soil geomorphology, buried soils, soils as paleoenvironmental indicators.
- Describing soil profiles in the field
- Understanding soil physisco-chemical properties: pH, texture, CEC, base saturation, etc.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: - In-class lessons integrated by selected readings.
