There is no hope for a general theory of PDE: specific equations have specific properties. Nevertheless, the tools which are used to derive them are intimately related and there is an impressive body of knowledge relevant to all, or large classes of, important equations. The course will approach a selection of such common features by the analysis of a few fundamental equations: transport equation and conservation laws, wave equation, Laplace and Poisson equations, the heat equation. The attention will be driven to understand what features characterize the simple equations we call important, with hints on their derivation and historical relevance.
