This course provides an in-depth exploration of environmental contaminants, their properties, sources, and environmental fate. It covers toxic properties, exposure routes, and methodologies for assessing the effects of pollutants on human health and ecosystems. A strong emphasis is placed on environmental toxicity and eco-toxicity, particularly in the context of industrial applications, as well as the challenges posed by emerging contaminants.
The course is structured around a combination of lectures, discussions, and active learning methodologies. Introductory topics include the fundamental concepts of environmental pollution, its global effects, and the risk assessment challenges associated with emerging contaminants. Specific topics address pollution in water, soil, and air, along with quality assessment methodologies. Students will explore key concepts such as hazard and risk, their connections to the circular economy, and the role of regulatory frameworks, including EU regulations (REACH and CLP) for chemical management.
The course also delves into material pollution, plastic pollution, and electronic waste, highlighting environmental challenges in recycling and sustainable solutions within a circular economy framework.
Students will select a specific topic of interest, conduct research, and develop a structured report throughout the course. They will learn to apply state-of-the-art tools for analysis and integrate sustainability considerations into their research. The course concludes with student presentations, where they will refine their ability to communicate scientific ideas effectively within a structured format.
