Syllabus
This course focuses on the development of skills and techniques related to the production (and consumption) of informative plots and graphics to be used in scientific publications.
Intended learning outcomes
At the end of this course you should be able to:
- Analyze and describe existing plots and graphics in terms of the Grammar of Graphics
- Create new plots using the ggplot2 implementation of the Grammar of Graphics
- Evaluate and choose the most appropriate visualization technique based on the data at hand
- Make use of color and other visual idioms to convey your message
- Build data preprocessing pipelines using R
Assessment
During the course we will do several assessment activities, including
- Analyzing and reading critically figures from papers in our area
- Analyzing and reading critically figures from our own papers
- Produce, as a final deliverable, a set of plots and graphics from a project each of us is currently working on
The final evaluation of the course is a simple pass/fail.
