Economic burden of atrial fibrillation by multimorbidity clusters.
Atrial fibrillation is the most common form of cardiac arrhythmia. The
prevalence of atrial fibrillation increases with age, standing at rates of
slightly less than 15% in individuals >75 years of age. These patients are
prescribed essential antithrombotic drugs to prevent complications
cardio-embolic (mainly stroke) related to fibrillation atrial fibrillation.
However, these types of prescriptions may in some cases nevertheless lead
to haemorrhagic complications. The research is part of the European AFFIRMO
(Atrial Fibrillation Integrated Approach in Frail, Multimorbid, and
Polymedicated Older People), which aims to improve the management of
patient with atrial fibrillation. In actual clinical practice patients are
usually elderly, and consequently suffering multimorbidity and subject to
polypharmacotherapy. The AFFIRMO project as a whole overall aim to help
improve adherence to the of patients and safety of care, as well as
participation in patients' chronic condition management.
The specific activity envisioned by the research grant is to analyse the
most frequent clusters of comorbidities' in individuals with atrial
fibrillation, with the aim of defining the economic burden respectively due
to comorbidities and to atrial fibrillation in these patients. Moreover,
the study will be aimed to define the interaction between multimorbidity
clusters and different drugs in determining the health care resources’
consumption and the health outcomes (mortality or complications as stroke
or gastrointestinal haemorrhage) haemorrhagic in patients with atrial
fibrillation. The analyses will be performed using the anonymized health
care administrative databases.
