This course provides an overview of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying cancer development and progression. Topics include cancer genetics and carcinogenesis, oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, DNA repair and epigenetic alterations, cell-cycle control, cell growth and death, cancer metabolism, tumor–microenvironment interactions, invasion and metastasis, and cancer genomics. Particular attention will be given to how alterations in these processes contribute to tumor initiation, evolution, and heterogeneity, and to their implications for cancer diagnosis and therapy. The course combines lectures with seminars, student-led Journal Clubs, and practical sessions in which students will explore cancer genomic and omics data using publicly available databases and analysis tools.

Categoria DIPARTIMENTO DI BIOLOGIA - DiBio / A.A.2026 - 2027 / Laurea Magistrale / Master's degrees / SC2999 - BIOLOGIA SANITARIA

The Integrative Biology course equips the students with the quantitative and computational tools essential for synthesizing, visualizing and annalyzing multi-omic data and studying biological life as a complete, dynamic molecular system. Student will master computational analysis to visualize the cellular landscape, tackling complex challenges like interpreting microRNA-gene networks, deciphering transcriptional regulation circuits, and mapping the epigenomic landscapes. Students will gain hands-on expertise in spatial transcriptomics technologies, revealing how cells function and communicate in situ. Finally, students will learn to build and analyze biological pathways, revealing the full dynamic interaction within complex biological systems.
